Are You Protecting Yourself On Instagram?

15 April 2014

A few months ago I came across a detail on Instagram that really bothered me. At the time I googled and figured out how to fix it and forgot about it until this week. I was chatting with a shop owner on Instagram and recognized a park in one of her pictures. This reminded me of my discovery months ago - and with a few quick clicks, I was able to verify that the park was, in fact, the one I thought it was...and I could tell where this shop owner lived.

I decided I wanted to share a post on this because I am sure there are a ton of people that don't realize they are sharing their pretty exact location with the world. This is particularly alarming for mothers. If you do not disable this feature, your photo locations show up on a map. This can easily lead a stranger to determine where your house is, what park you frequent with your children and what stores you shop at. Even if you are not a mom, there are still strange and creepy people out there and I don't think most would want their location shared publicly.

Here are the few easy steps to protect your privacy and location on Instagram:

1// Log into your Instagram account and click on the "pin" icon.

2// Click "Edit" in the top right corner. Then, click on the set of thumbnails you want to remove.

3// Click "Edit" and choose "Deselect All".

4// Confirm that you want to remove the geotags. This WILL NOT delete your photos - it will just delete your location data.

5// Repeat until all of the geotagged photos are gone.

6// Lastly, you need to change a setting on your phone to prevent the geotagging from happening again in future photos. Here is how to change this setting on an iPhone. Go to Settings --> Privacy --> Location Services. Scroll down until you find "Instagram" and turn the switch off.

That's it! I really hope this post was informative for anyone who may not have known they were sharing their location. I'm curious to see if there are a ton of other people who were unaware that this feature existed in Instagram.

  1. This is such amazing tips! I usually use tag location in a general sense as to tag whether my photos were in America or South Africa but keep the GPS on my phone turned off so that my applications cannot tag a specific place! I also keep most of my profiles to request status! But thank you for sharing! We are sometimes way to loose with our information!

  4. Thanks, I didn't know about that but just definitely used your steps to delete the geo tagging. How scary! I don't want random people knowing where I live or what Target I shop at! Thanks!

  5. Well that's weird! I knew that you could check in to a certain spot, but I didn't realized it was basically doing it for you on all of them anyways! That's weird, and not cool. I don't have an iPhone, so I'm not sure how how to turn it off for the future, but I'm off to Google that part of it.

  9. Oh wow! I had no idea that the majority of my photos were being automatically geotagged! That is scary! I just fixed my settings. Thank you Kaitlyn!

Do you ever worry about having your IG profile public rather than private? I changed mine to public a few months ago, but sometimes I worry that creepy weirdos are looking at or stealing photos of my daughter.

  14. Thanks for this. I always turn off location services under all social media apps, but it turned out that my IG one was on!

  15. I'm constantly checking my privacy settings to make sure none of the social media ones are turned on! It really freaks me out that people can stalk you through something you didn't even realize you were doing. I had to double check to make sure I was safe in this one!

  18. This is really helpful Kaitlyn...for me though, when I tried clicking on the pin, it didn't do anything? Any ideas of why it wouldn't work for me?

  21. Thanks for the tips! Social networks are real sneaky these days. Facebook has geotagging as well.

  22. Great to know! I'm really paranoid about stuff like this -getting a stalker or just someone knowing a little too much about me. I make I disable my gps on my phone as soon as I get new ones, because I don't need anyone tracking me! Thanks for sharing!

  23. I've had this turned off, thankfully! I also never post photos when I am an actual location (if we are at the park, I don't upload the photo until we leave, etc). It's easy to be trusting, because IG is full of amazing, amazing people...but it's always important to be safe, too! The internet is a crazy place!

  24. Thanx, but no thanx. To me it doesn't bother me as much because whom really looks at this stuff anyway. At least from what I experience so far and hope it continues. Its usually says home and nothing else. Or wherever I'm at without giving the specifics of it. In which this also applies to all others blogging and social media networking platforms or at least from what I gahter as well.

  30. *Sigh of relief*. You seriously helped me divert a panic attack. You cannot be too careful in today's world. There are some crazies out there. Thanks for posting this.

One other thing to mention, I had originally had location services switched off for Instagram until I posted a photo from a restaurant which I wanted to geotag. When I approved the geotag for one photo Instagram then started automatically geotagging all future photos. Just a word to the wise, if you turn it on for one photo, you have to turn it off manually again.

    :o)

  35. I always keep the GPS on my phone off so none of my apps can geotag my pictures and posts but that wasn't as fail proof as I thought! Apparently when I've forgotten to turn it off after using navigation or something requiring GPS I've been geotagging pictures in my house for all the world to see. :( Thanks for the post!!

My name is Nakita Shelton,am from California in USA.i want to use this opportunity to thank my great doctor who really made my life a pleasurable one today. This great man Dr.Brave brought my husband back to me, i had three lovely kids for my husband, about four years ago i and my husband has been into one qaurrel or the other until he finally left me for one lady. i felt my life was over and my kids thought they would never see their father again. i tried to be stronge just for the kids but i could not control the pains that torments my heart, my heart was filled with sorrows and pains because i was really in love with my husband. Every day and night i think of him and always wish he would come back to me, until one day i met a good friend of mine that was also in a situation like me but her problem was her ex-boyfriend who she had an unwanted pregnancy for and he refused to take responsibility and dumped her. she told me that mine was a small case and that i should not worry about it at all, so i asked her what was the solution to my problems and she gave me this great man email address. i was doubting if this man was the solution, so i contacted this great man and he told me what to do and i deed them all, he told me to wait for just two day and that my husband will come crawlling on his kneels just for forgiveness so i faithfully deed what this great man asked me to do and for sure after two days i heard a knock on the door, in a great suprise i saw him on his kneels and i was speechless, when he saw me, all he did was crying and asking me for forgiveness, from that day, all the pains and sorrows in my heart flew away, since then i and my husband and our lovely kids are happy.thats why i want to say a big thank you to Dr.Brave.
